On The Trowel
Добавлен 28 фев 2016
Kirk Johnstone Shows The Life of a Plasterer.
Basically I wanted to document what I do day to day so you will get videos of me working, a few tips and tricks, how to videos and probably a few funny stories from the pub.
The reason I made this chanel is to sort of leave a bit of me for my family.
I love hearing stories about my grandad, I've got a couple of pictures of him and I can vaguely remember him but he died when I was a little boy.
Can you imagine how great it would be if our grandparents and great grandparents left us actual videos footage of what their life was like. Well that's what I want to do and if you guys can benefit from it or even just enjoy watching my daily antics then all the better.
Anyway, have a great day.
Crack a can open and enjoy the show 😀

While you talk plastering, I'm hearing Red Dwarf 😂
I'm a fully trained and credentialed teacher with a Master's degree. You, sir, are a natural born teacher. Nothing from a book can improve anything you've said or any technique you've demonstrated. Even your sales pitch at the end was smooth. You've the gift of gab on top of your excellent practical skills and expertise as a teacher. Brilliant! 👏👏👏👏
so saying its terrible... why? why does it do or not do that your 70 quid one does different? to explain to us newbies
Wow thanks & i thought i new 😁.
Oh look theres a hawk!
You're a good teacher.
WOW.What a Pro!!!!
Always great to see a working man sharing his tips and tricks. Thanks for sharing
This guy is awesome. Totally entertaining.
Spreading the plaster out on the wet hawk is similar to what we would do when laying tile that was freshly cut on a wet saw. Just smearing some mud on the back of a wet piece of granite or marble doesn’t give good adhesion, we called it “buttering” the tile. Butter the tile and you were good to trowel it and set it. BTW, you have a very entertaining method of teaching things! Cheers
Piss the so called music off and it's okay
Great content and very skilled workmanship shown.
Have zero interest in plastering but watched all this start to finish 😂 you make it look sooooo easy
Thank you so much for this video, you do a great job of explaining how to work with plaster...I do plastering, but have never been trained, so I've always struggled with the basics of handling materials and tools. This video is a big help with that.
You would do well on eastenders , same “quality” of “acting” 😂 & where do I start with your plastering “knowledge”, First thing’s first, (not plastering, just general intelligence) you don’t seem to know the difference between horizontal & vertical, look it up in a dictionary because you got the meaning back to front, Now some plastering tips for you, Do not use bonding in a bathroom or on an outside wall or below a meter on downstairs walls, it attracts moisture, it’s a rookie mistake, hopefully that job is your own house & not an unlucky customers house, You also are using the feather edge back to front, it seems like you make up stuff to try & make yourself look knowledgeable, & yes listen to your dad & scratch up if possible, Don’t put multiple screws in your float, put just one masonry nail in the centre, they are harder & won’t wear as quick & are easy to tap in or out without using a screwdriver, & tell your labourer to stop being lazy & clean the buckets thoroughly between mix’s & tell him to make sure the water is crystal clear, (unless you are working on just one small wall & want it to go off quick). You’ll get there with more practice, You’re quite funny , I like you.
awesome !!
Man you’re a natural teacher. I’ve been around plaster, drywall mud etc. my whole life so I know much of this, but the way you explain it shows the master. Excellent
100% graft this lads really hard and mentally harder than it is physically 😂 I'd sort it for a days wages £230 including materials.
Number 1 👍🏻
How much would a repair like this cost? Thank you
Kirk would you be so kind to tell me where you bought a 14*4 inch carbon trowel. Cant find on anywhere 😟
I don't know about you but I can find them at home Depot or Ace hardware
Brilliant lesson 👍
My house is a 1967 build with popcorn ceiling like this, i want it skimmed over like this, but i was told because it’s asbestos don’t plaster it just cover it with boards? If you’re ever in Cambridge fella, my ceiling needs this doing, or if anyone knows a decent plasterer in Cambridge please comment. Cheers
Served time as plasterer back in day it was all sand cement float on skim you could not leave fag papers with straight edge 👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
The master plaster!!!❤
Nothing beats watching how an experienced plasterer handles their trowel!!!
Class act!!
I do like your videos but maybe tell Richard he needs to get an electrician to check his lights.
make it look so easy dude total respect
Top tip for the Novices
didn't watch. TO MANNY ADVERTS
RUclips put them in unfortunately. It's how they pay to provide this platform for you
Excellent tutorial, you should do more videos, you seem to natural. Absolutely to the point, great information, full of tricks and great techniques. Maybe make part 2, how to put on different surfaces, repairing damaged plaster walls, renovation repairs etc. Keep the tutorials going, your a natural.
What an amazing guy, Kirk you are spot on, you are a genuine person, the world will be a better place with more people like that.
Get a ph in there lad 😂👍
the secrets in the mix, they start at the bottom so it don't end up on the floor, these are not beginner's strokes, you are good, but you've been at it years.
As a DIY person, I hate trying to plaster ceilings but you make it look like a walk in the park. I know that’s down to your experience but even so it’s great to watch.
Many things go wrong here, no dust collection, no ear protection and why the use of brown plaster?
You are a God of the Trowel !!
Stick to plastering pal
Has man been on a few lines, rapid talk 😂
Great tips! Looks that this guy made that 2 or 3 times before 😊
Here in the states , I use a water based primer called zinnser 123. I usually use 2 or 3 layers of mesh because with expansion and contraction you can get a hairline crack in the joints. Yeah i have to build it up a little more . We have joint compound premixed drys slow but you can also use a setting type compound you have to mix. It comes in different setting times , 90 , 45 , 30 minutes, they also have a 5 minute. I have added warmer water and colder to speed up and slow down setting time . Really dependent on the temperature outside and how difficult the repair is. I have also used a halogen or incandescent light next to the repair to remove moisture. Because i usually would not only be doing the repair but also the painting . And the roof repair ! : ) Good repair and video !
You should take on some apprentices friend! Your a great teacher.
Guess a difference in vernacular of plaster. I was expecting a dry wall tutorial
Woefully late to viewing this video, and an earlier one on plaster, but in this video title you mention “hack”…, sir, it is quite apparent that your work is not “hack” work…, it is one of a professional tradesman, craftsman, and I might add “artist”. I am constantly amazed to watch folks like yourself, do these types work. I am a frustrated tile, and sheetrock “hack”. Your desire to not charge this customer for more work (as a result of somebody else’s shabby work ethic) is very noble… You may not ever see this customer again, but you don’t have any idea of the return on (investment), that gesture. If I was in that customers shoes I would have insisted on paying you as well. Great video, I am now a subscriber from the U.S., of A. Thank you sir.
Good video. Im American and was wondering if the mix is the same in different countries. Love the accent
Excellent tips bro.
Now I know what they mean on the pack by slowly., as in "add plaster to water slowly" i.e. not that slow at all really. Probably why I got so many flash sets when I've tried in the past - it'd take me way longer to mix than apply if I got that far and one cup (yes, that's what I was doing) was the difference between "looks ok" and "damn, another ruined bucket" :-D Next time I'll just tip it in like you did, cheers!
Put a little piss in ya plaster boys this job is takin too long
Where has this video been all my life? Pure skill.
